The Detroit Red Wings designated Day 5 of training camp Tuesday to feature a scrimmage between Team Red and Team White.

It’s a big deal, because it marks the first time anything resembling a hockey game has been played at Little Caesars Arena since March 10, when the Wings lost to the Carolina Hurricanes. That was two days before the NHL paused the 2019-20 season.

Ten months later, and as newcomer Vladislav Namestnikov put it, “we’ve been off for so long, and finally to get something close to a game is going to be good for us. Everyone is excited.”

Observations

Attempts to simulate a game atmosphere included loudspeaker announcements and music during whistles and timeouts — but did include playing the national anthem. It was strange, though, to see the majority of seats in the lower bowl covered by red tarps.

Midway through the first period, Luke Glendening left the ice bleeding in the face area. Couldn’t tell what happened because it was down at the other end of the ice.

Bobby Ryan had a nice chance denied by Thomas Greiss — Ryan drove the net on the play. He’s trying to reboot his career after being bought out last season by the Ottawa Senators.

Mathias Brome scored an unassisted goal at 10:17 of the first period. He’s a free agent signing out of Sweden trying to make the team.

First period ended with White up, 2-0, thanks to a Turner Elson goal at 10:22.

Elson had to be helped off the ice late in the second period. He was favoring his right leg.

The power play units did not distinguish themselves in their two opportunities through the first two periods.

Tyler Bertuzzi put Red on the board with a net-front tap-in off a rebound shot by Anthony Mantha at 7:55 of the third period as the Wings’ top line showing off their chemistry.

Evgeny Svechnikov was helped off the ice with 4 minutes to go, appearing to favor his right arm. He has been through so much, what with a knee injury that cost him the entire 2018-19 season.

Vladislav Namestnikov scored from the slot with 21.9 seconds remaining to make it 2-2. Mantha picked up his second assist. That forced the beauty that is scrimmage overtime.

Marc Staal scored with 1:42 to go for the Red Team, but play continued to give the coaches a chance to get a look at 3-on-3 play. That afforded Danny DeKeyser a chance to score for Team White with less than a minute to go.

Bertuzzi scored his second of the game to put Red up, 4-3, in the waning seconds. The opportunity to see players perform in shootout situations was still used.

Brome, Mantha and Larkin scored, settling the score at 6-4 for Red.
