Red Wings Bounce Back With 3-1 Win Over Columbus

Octopus Thrower

After a stretch of terrible hockey, the Red Wings looked rejuvenated by some big line shakeups, including Filip Zadina to the top line and Evgeny Svechnikov back to the lineup.

The Wings came out with a chip on their shoulder, dominating nearly every facet of play. In their best first period of the season, Detroit outshot Columbus 15-6, with the new top line of Filip Zadina-Dylan Larkin-Ryan Fabbri leading the charge. After hitting the goalpost a few times (Larkin is second in the league in goalposts hit, by the way), Detroit finally got on the board, as Adam Erne tipped in a Filip Hronek shot from the blue line.

The new top line finally scored on one of many fantastic 1st period scoring chances. Ryan Fabbri followed up Erne’s goal with another just 29 seconds later, scoring off of a fantastic pass from Captain Larkin.

Even with sustained pressure, Detroit failed to score in the second, and Columbus cut the lead to just one halfway through.

Detroit kept up the great play in the third period, refusing to rest on the single goal lead. Five minutes , Anthony Mantha notched Detroit’s third goal off of yet another amazing Larkin assist. Although it would be the Wings last goal of the game, they did not remove the foot from the pedal until the horn sounded the end of the game. Detroit finally found a way to get some pucks in net.

Game Notes:

  • Calvin Pickard started in net for the first time this season, and actually looked quite good, with a save percentage of .950. I’m sure Thomas Greiss was very happy at the goal support his fellow goaltender received.
  • Troy Stecher was mysteriously out of the lineup. Healthy scratch? Trade? Keep an eye on the postgame.
  • Larkin continues to show why he’s the captain on this team. Larks was directly responsible for two of the goals scored, and had a couple of scoring chances himself.
  • Zadina looked very, very comfortable on Detroit’s top line. Here’s hoping that’s a line change that stays.
