Red Wings: Which Metropolitan Teams Have Bad Contracts to Deal?

Octopus Thrower

Nearly every division in the NHL is chuck full of lengthy and overpriced contracts, and the Metropolitan Division is no different. While there aren’t quite as many blatantly bad contracts in the Metro, there are definitely opportunities for the Detroit Red Wings to take a cap beating in exchange for some draft capital.

Philadelphia Flyers

Shayne Gostisbehere – 2 Years, $4.5 Million (Cap Hit Per Year)

One of the biggest surprises of the 2020-21 season was when the Philly Flyers decided to put “Ghost” on waivers. Perhaps more surprising to some was that Gostisbehere went unclaimed. However, based on decreasing production and a heft contract, it’s no surprise that 30 teams passed on him.

The Flyers are stuck with Ghost’s contract for two more years. Although they aren’t necessarily in cap hell yet, the organization might be looking to sign free agents to force a rebound year. Also, a few of their younger prospects will need signing very soon (Carter Hart, Patrick Nolan, etc.). If the Flyers want to more room to work with in the offseason, offloading Shayne Gostisbehere’s contract might be the easiest way to do it. With two years left, Philly won’t be able to unload the albatross without some solid capital – but Steve Yzerman is always willing to make a deal if the price is right.
