Winging It In Motown

What Sam Gagner is bringing to the Detroit Red Wings

“You can still go about your business and be a good example,” he said. “I think that’s been the way I’ve tried to lead over the course of my career. I’ve tried to be an example to follow. You can do that regardless of what is going on. And in our room, there’s still opportunity to have discussions among our group and make sure everyone is on the same page.”

This is a more Gagner-centric version of the story from the other day.

O’Ree-inspired skates to be worn by NHL players

“Through the creation of these special skates to honor Willie O’Ree, Bauer Hockey is powerfully representing the inclusive values that make our game and our world better,” NHL senior vice president of Social Impact, Growth Initiatives and Legislative Affairs Kim Davis said. “We are proud to have worked with Bauer on this project, which adds to the monthlong celebration of Black history while also demonstrating our belief that inclusion is a year-round sport — by using the skates to raise money for ongoing grassroots diversity and inclusion efforts in hockey.”

These look really great.

McDavid one point from 500, tying Crosby in games needed for milestone

McDavid can become the 20th NHL player to score 500 points in 400 games or fewer, and if he gets there Wednesday he would tie Crosby for eighth-fastest. Wayne Gretzky is first, reaching 500 points in 234 games, and Mario Lemieux is second at 287 games.

I’m writing this before this game happens, so I don’t know for sure this will happen. But it seems pretty likely.

MacKinnon of Avalanche to shoot for hole-in-one during NHL Outdoors

MacKinnon will take part in the One Million Dollar Hole-in-One Challenge presented by Bridgestone on the par-3 17th hole of Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. That hole was the same one Sakic, the Avalanche’s general manager, aced during the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in 2011.

MacKinnon’s attempt will air during the first intermission of the 2021 Bridgestone NHL Outdoors Saturday game between the Avalanche and the Vegas Golden Knights (3 p.m. ET; NBC, SN, SN1, TVAS), which will be played on a rink built on the 18th fairway of the Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada.

If MacKinnon makes the hole-in-one, the NHL will donate $1 million to the NHL/NHLPA Learn to Play program.

Or…they could just donate $1 million to the NHL/NHLPA Learn to Play program regardless of if a low event thing happens.
