Red Wings sign Wyatt Newpower to entry-level contract – NHL

Newpower, 23, skated in 24 games as a first-year pro with the American Hockey League’s Cleveland Monsters in 2020-21, producing 10 points (3-7-10) to tie for 10th on the team in scoring, along with 14 penalty minutes and a team-leading plus-10 rating. The 6-foot-3, 194-pound blueliner made his professional debut on Feb. 12 vs. Rochester, picked up his first two AHL points with a pair of assists on Feb. 22 at Rockford and tallied his first professional goal on March 20 vs. Grand Rapids. Prior to signing a one-year AHL contract with Cleveland on April 6, 2020, Newpower concluded a four-year career at the University of Connecticut in 2019-20, pacing the team with a plus-23 rating and leading the school’s defensemen with a collegiate career-best 22 points (3-19-22) in 34 games as captain of the Huskies. He tied for fifth on Connecticut in scoring and for sixth among all Hockey East defensemen.
