Winging It In Motown

Two online passion projects help fans track the Red Wings’ top prospects in Sweden – The Athletic (Paywall)

Last September, shortly before the start of the 2020-21 Swedish Hockey League season, Zach Ellenthal went live with a new project — an advanced hockey stats website called Svengelska Hockey, dedicated to Sweden’s top professional league.

I know this is behind a paywall, but lately the other beat writer articles are also behind a paywall more often than not, so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

This was a good day.

Golden Knights would be ‘foolish’ to look past Canadiens in Semifinals

The Canadiens (24-21-11 in the regular season), who were the No. 4 seed in the Scotia North Division, defeated the No. 1-seeded Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games in the Stanley Cup First Round. They swept the No. 2-seeded Winnipeg Jets in four games in the Stanley Cup Second Round.

He’s right. Any team would be foolish to look past any other team. While Vegas should be a tougher opponent than either team Montreal has beaten to this point, the Canadiens are on a roll.

Barzal, Pulock lift Islanders over Lightning in Game 1 – Sportsnet.ca

Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves and the New York Islanders got goals from Mathew Barzal and Ryan Pulock to beat the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 on Sunday in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup semifinals.

Varlamov won his fourth straight playoff start, joining teammate Ilya Sorokin as only the third pair of goaltenders from the same team to have personal winning streaks of at least four games in a single postseason.

New York did a good job of shutting down Tampa for most of the game. I can’t find the stat, but I read that NY kept TB without a shot on the rush, while NY got 9 such shots. This series could hinge on how often the Lightning’s power play gets on the ice. We’ve all seen how terribly inconsistent the officiating has been the entire playoffs, so who knows?
