Joe Veleno, Lucas Raymond, Sebastian Cossa highlight Red Wings’ prospect tournament roster

Detroit News

Detroit — The Red Wings will have a lengthy list of interesting prospects participating in the upcoming prospect tournament.

The Wings released their roster for the NHL Prospect Tournament, which begins Sept. 16 — the Wings will play Dallas at 7 p.m. — and runs through Sept. 20 at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City.

The Wings’ roster is highlighted by three recent first-round picks — forward Joe Veleno (2018), forward Lucas Raymond (2020), and goaltender Sebastian Cossa (2021).

They’ll be joined by forward Jonatan Berggren (2018, second round) and defensemen Jared McIsaac (2018, second round) and Donovan Sebrango (2020, third round).

A total of 15 of the 23 players on the Wings’ roster are former Wings draft picks. The drafted prospects range in age from two 18-year-olds chosen in this year’s Entry Draft (Cossa and sixth-round forward Pasquale Zito) to forward Chase Pearson, 24, a 2015 fifth-round pick who returns to the tournament after finishing third on the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins with 22 points (eight goals) in 28 games last season.

Over the tournament’s history, 697 players have moved on to play in at least one NHL game, including 18 who played for the Red Wings in 2020-21: Tyler Bertuzzi, Alex Biega (Buffalo), Dennis Cholowski, Robby Fabbri (St. Louis), Valtteri Filppula, Darren Helm, Taro Hirose, Filip Hronek, Dylan Larkin, Gustav Lindstrom, Anthony Mantha, Patrik Nemeth (Dallas), Michael Rasmussen, Givani Smith, Marc Staal (NY Rangers), Evgeny Svechnikov, Filip Zadina and Veleno.

The five-team tournament will see teams play either three or four games, with the Red Wings taking on Dallas, followed by St. Louis on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. and Columbus on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m.

Due to the unbalanced schedule for 2021, the Matthew Wuest Memorial Cup will not be awarded this season.

Time changes

The Red Wings announced a pair of changes for start times for games this coming season.

The game against New Jersey, on Dec. 18 at Little Caesars Arena, will begin at 8 p.m.

Also, the Jan. 31 game at LCA against Anaheim has been changed to 7:30 p.m.

Training camp opens with the 22nd annual Training Camp Golf Classic at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa on Sept. 22.

The Wings will hit the ice for the first time Sept. 23 at Centre Ice Arena, and practice daily through Sept. 28. The Wings play their first exhibition game Sept. 29 in Chicago.

The first exhibition game at LCA takes place Sept. 30 against Buffalo.
