The Detroit Red Wings Stock Exchange Week Four

Octopus Thrower

After an rough start to a four-game road trip, the Detroit Red Wings have have fallen below .500 again, currently sitting at 8-9-2 – let’s assess a few player performances by revisiting the “stock exchange”.

Trending Up

Dylan Larkin

After missing a few games due to personal reasons, Larkin has been electric. Perhaps the best example of the captain’s influence on the team was Tuesday night in Dallas. After Dallas leapt out to a 3-0 lead in the second period, the Wings started to claw their way back, scoring two goals in the final 11 minutes of the second period. However, Larkin was pulled because of a false-positive COVID-19 test and missed the third period. Detroit was visibly drained of energy, and could not complete the comeback.

Larkin doesn’t just bring speed and talent to the team, he also brings a fight and grit that can keep Detroit competitive nearly every night.

Joe Veleno

With Mitchell Stephens injured and out of the lineup, Veleno is going to get an extended look as the fourth-line center. He had a strong game against Vegas Thursday night, which led to his second goal of the season. Veleno had an excellent offseason and preseason and looks hungry to make the roster. Buy stock in the young center before he becomes a regular in the lineup, which could very well happen in the coming weeks.

Trending Down

Mitchell Stephens

Stephens stock is falling through no fault of his own. He suffered a lower body injury against the Montreal Canadiens and has been placed on the injury reserve. It’s unclear how long he’ll be out, but his stock is at an all-time low until he returns.

The team

It’s been a rough week for the Red Wings. When Detroit began their four-game road trip out west, they were two games above .500, having won four of their last five. After a three-game skid, the team has slipped back under .500, now 8-9-2 on the season. The Wings have been extremely hot and cold this year, winning and losing in chunks. The road trip will be considered a disaster if they fall to the Arizona Coyotes Saturday night.

Holding Steady

Moritz Seider

Seider is still in second place in rookie scoring and he’s still Detroit’s best defenseman. Not much has changed for the young German, so his stock is staying put.

Tyler Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi is still the leading goal scorer on the team and one of the most important pieces, but he was a bit silent this week (to be fair, so was essentially all of Detroit’s offense). For now, his stock is still extremely strong, but it didn’t fluctuate much during the team’s rough road stretch.
