Former Red Wing Darren McCarty teams with local chicken wing spot for competition

Detroit Wing Co.’s Woodhaven location on Monday will host a chicken wing eating contest emceed by former Red Wing Darren McCarty.

The competition is between members of Woodhaven’s police and fire departments. Those representatives will set out to eat as many bone-in classic-style Detroit Wing Co.(DWC) wings as they can within 20 minutes.

The department that eats the most chicken wings will be deemed the winner. Along with bragging rights, the eatery will donate $5,000 to Forgotten Harvest, a food rescue and hunger-relief organization.

Guests and fans can stop in for a meet-and-greet with Darren McCarty from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. ahead of the competition.

The competition follows from 2-3 p.m.

Also on Monday. Detroit Wing Co. will have an all-day at the Woodhaven location only. The chain’s classic bone-in chicken wings and boneless wings will be discounted at 40% off.

Gus Malliaras is the founder and president of the Detroit Wing Co., which got its start in 2015 with a single location in Eastpointe specializing in all-fresh and all-natural chicken wings paired with 20  house-made sauces.  Its menu also includes sides of mac n’ cheese, poutine, cole slaw, and more.

Malliaras has grown and franchised the business exponentially since then, with 21  locations.

Detroit Wing Co.’s Woodhaven location is at 23141 Allen Road.
