3 Defenseman the Red Wings Should Target in Free Agency

Octopus Thrower

The Detroit Red Wings roster, although young, could really turn the corner this off-season.

The Detroit Red Wings roster will look quite different come next season. There are 11 players that are currently without a contract heading into free agency. Some of those names are: Filip Zadina, Mitchell Stephens, Danny DeKeyser, Marc Staal, Jake Walman and Thomas Greiss.

Normally seeing that many names in free agency would scare me. However, this is a different scenario than we are used to seeing. None of the names I listed above really bothers me. In other words, if they sign in-division, they don’t scare me. Which, in this case is good.

Looking at the free agency list, there are a lot of very, very, very talented players out there for Steve Yzerman to keep his eye on. Now, rather or not he targets any of them is the question at hand, but this is all hypothetical.

When looking at this list of free agents, there are many names that jump off of the page. Now, it’s still unclear what happens with some of the bigger names. For example, we have no idea what will happen in Calgary with Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau. We also don’t know if Kris Letang or Evgeni Malkin re-sign in Pittsburgh since Crosby is returning.

Everything at this point in time is just so up in the air. However, let’s speculate and say that the Red Wings attack free agency with some urgency. I recently wrote about three forwards they could target. Today, we look at defenseman.
