The Detroit Red Wings took on the Stars down in Dallas for Game no. 27 of the 2021-22 season. It was the final game of the road trip, and they may not have emerged victorious against Dallas, but they won the road trip.
The Detroit Red Wings went 2-1-1 on the road trip to pick up five points for the season total. It was a hard-fought game, but the Red Wings let the fatigue get the most out of them. I anticipated the Red Wings to look sluggish in the Game Preview, but that was not the case.
As the game went on, things went downhill for the Red Wings, and the fatigue continued to mount. The good thing is the Red Wings were able to pick up a point by forcing overtime.

Let’s get into the action and go through a recap of the game.
Pre-game
It’s not every game that there’s something to note in the pre-game, but the Detroit Red Wings took a moment to honor forward David Perron, as Saturday’s contest was his 1,000th career game. The Red Wings all sported custom “Perron 1,000” shirts during warm-ups.
First Period
The Red Wings came out and opened the scoring action to take a 1-0 lead. Fresh off the bench, Dylan Larkin gained the puck near the top of the offensive zone and let a booming slapshot go to find the back of the net. He beat Jake Oettinger and helped the Red Wings get up early.
The Stars answered back before the close of the first. Stars forward Denis Gurianov slipped the defenseman, getting behind Gustav Lindstrom, and found the back of the net short-side on Ville Husso.
Gurianov got some help from Marchment, who sold that he was carrying the puck to Lindstrom, who let Gurianov walk right behind him. He flipped a saucer pass around him to Gurianov, who was able to tie things up at one apiece.
That closed the scoring in the first. I thought the Red Wings would come out sluggish, as I indicated in the preview, but for the last leg of the road trip, they came out and did well compared to what I expected.
Second Period
The second period was all about Dallas. Penalties became a problem for Detroit, who let Dallas make the most of their scoring chances. Ultimately, the Stars were able to take their first lead of the contest courtesy of their captain, Jamie Benn.
During a Jake Walman four-minute minor for high-sticking, Jason Robertson found Benn in front of the net wide-open. After a good pass from Robertson, Benn showed off the quick release and found the back of the net.
The Red Wings could not be silenced in the third, though. It was Mr.1000 himself who was able to collect a goal late in the second. With less than a minute left, the Red Wings won a draw in the offensive zone, and Ben Chiarot put a puck on the net. Perron got a stick on it, and the Red Wings were able to tie things back up at two.
Third Period
Things were relatively quiet in the third. Both teams were unable to find the back of the net as the game headed to overtime. Both teams had several good scoring chances, with Dallas seeming to have the edge at times. Every time, Husso was able to stand on his head and make the saves.
Overtime
The game was unable to be decided in regulation, clinching the Red Wings a huge point for their season totals. That was the real victory, but things went downhill from puck-drop. The Red Wings came out sluggish, with an incredibly sloppy performance in overtime.
Between errant passes, players running into one another, and Larkin not being able to get to the bench, things went downhill. With a 2-on-1 break, Marchment had a nice pass to set things up again. He sent a pass across to Nils Lundkvist, who found the back of the net for the game-winner.
The Red Wings have completed the last leg of their four-game road trip. While they were defeated in overtime, it was not the worst end to the road trip. They head back to Detroit now, taking on the Carolina Hurricanes on December 13th.
