Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde was ejected from Tuesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins after vehemently disagreeing with a call in the second period.
The event unfolded at 8:41. The Penguins were on a power play, and it appeared Jeff Carter’s shot crossed the goal line but there was no call made. Officials reviewed — and ruled the puck had crossed, making it 3-3.
The Wings challenged that Alex Nedeljkovic had been interfered with, which would have negated the call. But officials ruled there had not been interference prior to the puck crossing the goal line.
That set off Lalonde, who could be seen arguing and using a four-letter word on the bench.
Associate coach Bob Boughner was the ranking coach with Lalonde gone, with assistants Alex Tanguay and Jay Varady also on the bench. Boughner is a former NHL head coach, so he has familiarity with running a bench.
