Detroit Red Wings: Revisiting a possible extension for Alex Chiasson

Octopus Thrower

Before the Detroit Red Wings 2022-23 season came to an end forward Alex Chiasson started to really get things going in terms of offense in his last-minute chance with the Red Wings. Bob Heyrman suggested that the Red Wings should consider bringing Chiasson back for 2023-24 on a contract extension.

The Detroit Red Wings brought him in after the trade deadline, and he jumped right in and found his way, especially when it came to his ability to find the back of the net on the powerplay. In Heyrman’s piece, he mentioned that Chiasson might be able to come back on a one-year deal if Yzerman sees fit.

Frankly, he’s onto something. The Red Wings really need to give this some thought, as they are trying to keep progressing through their rebuild, and cheap/efficient weapons will be vastly beneficial. It could very much so be a cost-efficient move for the Red Wings.

When it comes to the Red Wings’ plans, finding value in players like Chiasson is what will help Yzerman save money to add to the value of the team elsewhere. The Red Wings need to consider bringing back Chiasson.

Detroit Red Wings need to ponder re-signing Alex Chiasson.

Chiasson may have only been with the Red Wings for 20 games on his NHL deal, but he was able to score six goals and add three assists for nine total points. On top of that, five of his goals and two of his assists came while the Red Wings were on the powerplay.

It’s impressive that seven of his nine points were with a man advantage. He seemingly always found a way to get it done when the Red Wings had the extra man on the attack. He may have made a minimum, but the Red Wings got plenty of value out of him, even over 20 games.

For the Red Wings, in 2022-23, they should be looking to grab Chiasson on a deal worth closer to a million. It seems like one of those opportunities for a one-year, $925,000 type deal where he plays a role in the bottom six and helps with the team’s forward.

As the team starts putting things together this off-season and delves into some of their free agency plans, they may want to consider Chiasson returning on a return deal that helps benefit the Red Wings.

He would be an inexpensive signee that would be able to bring some benefit to the powerplay and also just fill a depth role in the bottom six.
