The Detroit Red Wings have a long summer ahead of them. They have a ton to look forward to and many things to get done before the team hits the ice next fall. Between the draft and then free agency, the Red Wings will have a chance to make some improvements.

If there’s one thing that the Detroit Red Wings faithful should know, it’s that roster shakeup will not scare Steve Yzerman. Yzerman will do whatever he needs to get the team in tip-top shape heading into the fall.

After being a somewhat competitor, keeping the Red Wings in the postseason race this season, it will be exciting to see what Yzerman can cook up this off-season. When it comes to free agency, there are some places where the Red Wings hope to improve.

The free agent market is admittedly thin. There are some names at the top that make it a top-heavy class or, at least, one that the bottom falls out of relatively quickly. But that does not mean that teams will not go out and look for talent to fill some needs within the forward core.

The Red Wings have some areas to improve and some depth players to target. They can go into this free-agent class and find themselves a player or two to help their efforts as they get back to the postseason. Let’s dive into some of these players who might fill the role the Red Wings may be looking to fill.

Here are five forwards for the Detroit Red Wings to target.
