Red Wings Add Forward Sprong

The Detroit Red Wings signed forward Daniel Sprong on Saturday.

The deal is for one year at $2 million dollars.

Sprong had been set to become a restricted free agent for the Seattle Kraken but was not tendered a qualifying offer, making him unrestricted.  He scored 21 goals in 68 games for the Kraken last season, the most of his career.  However, he’s scored 67 goals in 268 career games for Seattle, Washington, Anaheim, and Pittsburgh, which works out to 20.5 goals per 82 games.

This is the kind of signing I think the Red Wings should be making right now. A short-term “show me” deal that could result in Sprong being flipped for assets at the trade deadline or signed longer-term.  I like this move a lot, especially compared to other moves the Red Wings have made today (confirmed or otherwise).

With my jersey number geek hat on, I’m going to predict that Sprong wears #41 for Detroit, taking it from Jared McIsaac.
