Detroit Red Wings miss out on bringing back Alex Chiasson

Octopus Thrower

The Detroit Red Wings 2022-23 season had some memorable names on their roster. One of the names who may not ring a bell as much as other usual players is Alex Chiasson. The veteran forward has bounced around in his career but found a home in Detroit for part of the year.

After logging 29 total games with the Grand Rapids Griffins at the AHL level, he was brought in with the NHL club. He scored nine goals and added 11 assists for 20 total points. In his time with the Detroit Red Wings, Chiasson found his way into 20 games and certainly made some impact.

Chiasson scored six goals and added three assists for nine total points. He made an impact in his short time, and it may not seem like his stat line was super thrilling, but he certainly played a role with the Red Wings organization.

It was not much, but the Red Wings may have even wanted to bring Chiasson back but the Red Wings had their last domino of the offseason fall with their contract extension for Joe Veleno. Instead, Chiasson has found a new home that he will try to stick as part of.

Detroit Red Wings forward Alex Chiasson latches on elsewhere.

Chiasson has latched himself onto a new organization, hoping to earn a role with the team in the bottom six with some specialty addition to help out on the power play. Chiasson has signed a PTO contract with the Boston Bruins.

He will join Boston’s training camp on a professional tryout as he hopes to land a spot and break camp with the Bruins. Frankly, best of luck to Chiasson. He showed up and joined the Red Wings roster and did a great job in the limited time he was on the ice.

He ended up settling in on the power play well and finding the back of the net often. Really just being a good filler forward in the bottom six. He may not be someone who deserved some major extension or even a couple million per year, but a league minimum or hair above it on another one-year deal was worth exploring.

I am not sitting here badgering Steve Yzerman for not bringing Chiasson back; he did plenty this off-season that should leave fans excited. But Chiasson was one of those players that it was worth kicking the tires on a cheap extension to keep him around once again.

Instead, he will be competing for a roster spot out East with the Bruins, looking to make the most of his PTO with Boston, landing a chance with them.
