Octopus Thrower

The Detroit Red Wings are looking to see Jonatan Berggren slot into the team’s lineup in 2023-24 and carve out a role with the team. Especially when it comes to the special teams. Even with some new additions, there has to be hope that the former second-rounder can show off the playmaking skills at a higher rate.

There’s no reason to be overly zealous about Berggren having some 40-goal season. However, being able to show playmaking skills for the Detroit Red Wings this season and operating on a powerplay unit to find success.

Berggren has come a long way in his time with Detroit, really gaining some steam with his development path. He cracked the team’s NHL roster during the 2022-23 season, and after his rookie campaign, he’s looking for more.

This upcoming season, his goal should be looking to take another stride in his offense and even stride to produce a bit more on the powerplay. There’s reason to believe that some of the off-season additions could help foster better special teams, which would help Berggren if he gets the chance to roll with one of the teams’ two units.

Detroit Red Wings forward Jonatan Berggren is looking to make strides.

Berggren has been on a long road of development, and the Red Wings should be happy with how things have gone to this point, even after one year. But the key now is development. Berggren played in 67 games last season for the Red Wings.

He ended up adding 15 goals and adding 13 assists for 28 total points during the 2022-23 season. Looking at things a bit deeper, Berggren managed five powerplay goals and four assists for nine total points with a man advantage.

With a couple of off-season additions, including the big one in Alex DeBrincat, the Red Wings should be able to perform at a higher clip on the power play. Berggren is someone the Red Wings should still hope to utilize in 2023-24.

Berggren has the playmaking abilities that have shown up in-game. He has good eyes for the ice and can make things happen in the offensive zone, something that also shows up on the power play for the Red Wings.

The 2023-24 season is out on the horizon, and this season, Berggren needs to try and make some strides to capitalize on his offensive development. Even with some new faces populating the Red Wings forward core, Berggren is still someone who has exciting upside with the team.
