The Detroit Red Wings came out looking to snap their three-game losing streak. They were able to do just that against the New York Islanders. While it was not the easiest road to get there, they were able to come out on top in overtime.
The Detroit Red Wings wanted to get a better effort early on in the game, with head coach Derek Lalonde making it clear that he wanted to see better results in the first period. The Red Wings may not have scored, but they came out with their feet on the gas.
Detroit was putting a ton of pressure on the Islanders, who are not the most offensive team. They have some weapons but are typically a defensively-minded team with a fantastic netminder to pair.
Early on, Detroit succeeded by competing offensively and trading scoring chances. They trusted Ville Husso to get the job done, and he stood tall in the crease and was solid throughout the night, but especially early on.

While the Red Wings kept up with the forecheck, it was the Islanders who would strike first. They picked up one in the second period and then turned around to add another in the third. They were ahead by two goals for some time, but Detroit did not quit.
Even though Detroit struggled to finish and find the back of the net, they did not quit and continued to put pressure on the Islanders. Late in the third, it broke the Islanders. Daniel Sprong ignited the Red Wings with a big goal in the third.
Soon after that, the energy continued to prove beneficial for Detroit after Jake Walman added a tally from the point, tying things up. Detroit was impressive, finding ways to continue to create scoring chances, and they tilted the ice.
After that, JT Compher was able to get Detroit a lead. It was a beautiful goal setup by Compher, who snuck around the back of the net after dishing it off, getting open out in front. He caught a gorgeous feed from Mortiz Seider and was able to rip it into the back of the net for the tally.
Soon after, a tough penalty left Detroit short-handed, and Bo Horvat came out to score and tie things up once again, forcing this one to get to overtime. Both teams traded scoring chances, but it was Compher and Lucas Raymond who connected on a gorgeous play to secure the Red Wings a victory.

The Red Wings secured two points in the overtime victory, which was huge for them. They picked up the 4-3 win on Long Island after defeating New York in overtime. But it was moreover how they did it that was even more impressive.
Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin is a really tough goalie to beat, and he played well. But Detroit had the answers. It took time to get the puck behind Sorokin, with him holding Detroit scoreless until about the halfway mark of the third period, but the Red Wings got it done.
The key to their success came from pressure. The Red Wings got it done in the dirty areas, put pressure on New York to make plays, and were able to create offense by doing so. Husso also looked steady all game long. One of the Islanders’ goals was a tough one where it looked like he was screened out in front.
Detroit did things right and was able to execute better than New York, finding the back of the net when it mattered in overtime to pick up the win—Detroit’s back in action on Thursday vs. the Panthers.
