Detroit Red Wings: Carter Mazur returns after injury during training camp

Octopus Thrower

The Detroit Red Wings faithful may be fixated on the NHL club and where the team is at after the first few weeks of the season. However, there was some news with regard to one of their younger players that is worth shedding some light on.

The Detroit Red Wings announced that they have activated Carter Mazur from the Injured Reserve (IR) and assigned him to the Grand Rapids Griffins. He will join the team’s AHL squad looking to get back into the swing of things.

This comes after the Red Wings forward got hurt while tuning up for the season this summer. He did not make it out of training camp, or even Prospect Camp for that matter, after sustaining an injury that forced him to take some time off.

For the Red Wings, Mazur has a chance to be a big piece of the puzzle if things click. He’s someone that I think will click in the long run, though it will be interesting to see how things go with Mazur in the AHL. He has a chance for a big season.

Detroit Red Wings activate Carter Mazur; assign him to the Griffins.

Mazur began the season on the non-roster Injured Reserve (IR) while tending to his lower-body injury. But after recovering, he had to be placed somewhere. It was not really a conversation about Mazur starting with Detroit, especially since he did not go through training camp, so it was a formality for him to be activated and immediately assigned to the Griffins.

After a tremendous collegiate career with the University of Denver, Mazur jumped in with the Red Wings organization. He finished 2022-23 with Denver before jumping, where he scored 22 goals and added 15 assists for 37 total points over 40 games played.

After that, Mazur signed his entry-level contract with Detroit and joined the Griffins organization for a trial run. He played in six games for the Griffins, averaging a point per game, tallying three goals and three assists.

Mazur’s offensive touch is his calling card. He can score goals and be a playmaker in the offensive zone when his game is firing on all cylinders. The Red Wings will hope that he can catch fire with the Griffins now that he is healthy once again.

The move to active and assign Mazur should excite Red Wings fans. Mazur has a chance to have a big season if all goes well as he gets back into the swing of things and hits the ice for the AHL squad.
