Detroit Red Wings: Alex DeBrincat reunited with Patrick Kane once again

Octopus Thrower

The Detroit Red Wings have made the move to bring Patrick Kane to Hockeytown. The team announced on Tuesday that they were bringing in Kane on a one-year deal worth $2.75 million (pro-rated), making it official later in the evening.

This comes after the Detroit Red Wings were rumored to be in the final two teams Patrick Kane was deciding between, as the rumor mill was churning aplenty the last few days. The move to sign Kane also reunites Kane with an old friend.

Alex DeBrincat, who’s been a nice breath of fresh air for the Red Wings offense, will play alongside Kane again. DeBrincat has been a stud since being acquired this off-season, jumping right in and getting in tune with his scoring touch.

Now, he’ll be playing alongside Kane, and the two certainly have history from DeBrincat’s days in Chicago when he first broke into the league. Having an old linemate back has to be exciting, especially when it’s Kane.

Detroit Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat reunited with Patrick Kane.

One of the rumors early on in the season regarding Kane pointed to the two wanting to play alongside one another again. While the decision was not up to DeBrincat, Steve Yzerman likely used that as a bargaining chip as they tried to work out a deal to bring Kane to Hockeytown.

DeBrincat was originally drafted by the Blackhawks, where he spent the first five seasons of his career. He played alongside Kane from 2017-18 up until 2021-22. He ended up being traded to the Ottawa Senators and eventually Detroit in the blockbuster deal this off-season.

But, in his five years with Chicago, he developed a good rapport with Kane, playing on the same line and having success in doing so. DeBrincat’s best years in Chicago saw him muster up over 75 points on the season, including 2018-19 and 2021-22, where he had 41 goals in each campaign.

Now, in Detroit, DeBrincat’s got 12 goals and eight assists for 20 points over 20 games in 2023-24. There’s no telling exactly what Kane’s production will look like as he rebounds from surgery, but there will surely be a nice morale boost for DeBrincat to be reunited with Kane.

I’d bet Newsy tries to work in some line combinations where the two are alongside each other on the ice once again. Kane managed 57 points last year with 21 goals and 36 assists between his time with the Blackhawks and Rangers.

He’ll be looking to prove that he’s good to go and able to benefit the Red Wings, which I believe he’ll be able to do in no time. Nonetheless, the two are back in the same uniform once again as Kane comes to Detroit and gets started with his new club.
